Interpreting Dance v/s Gymnastics.
Thanks to the advent of the popular International Dance Show, So you think you can Dance, there has been increased awareness about how many varied dance forms and styles exist from the Viennese Waltz to Krumping! It has brought along with it many other reality dance shows, such as our very own Dance India Dance or the kids dance "talent" show Chak Dhoom Dhoom.
What interests me while being witness to a performance is how the dancers use their bodies to make it look aesthetic. By aesthetic I do not mean holding a rope and swinging on it like Tarzan and Jane! Yes it is difficult, you need a lot of muscular strength and power to be able to even hold on to the rope for dear life, but is that dance? The Indian dance shows bring out wonderful talents but somewhere leave me disappointed. The Indian choreographers today feel the need to display how dancers can be a Superman or a Powerpuff Girl, after a small song and dance sequence, they are made to swing through the forests on their ropes, performing various stunts that you also can watch at a circus! No offence to performances or shows where you have to score points to win. But if you just compare the Indian Shows with the International counterparts, you can feel the insecurity among the Indian Choreographers/Dancers! There is a need to show- off!
Moving on....The word "Contemporary" has opened a Pandora's box as far as Dance and Movement is concerned. Even a flick of a wrist seems to be a beautifully crafted dance movement. I came across a beautiful piece of choreography. 2 Dancers. No props. Just their bodies.Watch.....
Right from the beginning from the time his hand slides out to gently clasp her hair, you see her beautifully moving into his lap and you know instantly that this piece will showcase strength. Its the amazing transition of movements, even when there is someone sitting on your back (the way kids want to play Ghoda Gadi) and you still have that ability to move through the floor so effortlessly. That for me is strength in dance. It is that peaceful internal strength that makes me want to watch a dancer perform. They are trying to convey a story or meaning through their movement. The beauty of it being that it is open to interpretation!
My mother once watched a contemporary dance performance with me. At the end of the performance she looked at me and said " I din't understand anything!" , which made me wonder why she felt the need to intellectualize the performance. Now when I think of it, I realise, in Indian Classical Dances such as Bharatnatyam, there are specific mudras or gestures, that signify a particular emotion, animal or thing. Accompanied by facial expressions, it might not be too difficult to decipher when the dancer is expressing happiness or surprise or sadness. On the other hand, along with very slight facial expressions, in most contemporary pieces, the Body does the talking. It is therefore, what you perceive, what you imagine and what you feel during the piece, which makes it a very personal experience.

I Love Rumba! I Love You!
Since Valentines day is just couple of weeks away, all of us around Bombay will witness Red Hearts versus the Orange Flags! What we will also witness this time around is The Rumba - The Dance of Love.
"The Rumba is a very slow, serious, romantic dance with flirtation between the partners. The dance is fun to watch, it has a teasing theme in which the lady flirts with and then rejects her male partner, often with apparent sexual aggression. The Rumba spotlights the lady's rhythmic body movements and hip actions resulting in intense, almost steamy, scenes of passion."
Sounds like too much to handle??? Worry not!! Its really simple as long as you dance with the one you love! All you need to do is close your eyes, feel the music and dance with your partner like no ones watching! Or even better surprise your partner by getting him/her along for this Valentines Day special workshop!

Intellectualizing Dance
I have always wondered, while learning the classical forms of dance, such as ballet or bharatnatyam, how would it make a difference if my hand was 2 centimeters above or below or while doing the barre in ballet so what if my leg doesn't reach that 90 degree mark! who decides where your hands should be placed and even if it was decided that these are the rules in ballet or any other classical form, why is it that one should follow it without understanding it? is it always necessary to "intellectualize" dance?
Its after a while of pondering that i realized that may be dance is all about showing off. Its about showing how high you can jump, how you are so flexible that your leg can hit your hand high up, you can roll forward and roll back continuously making it seem so effortless. Dance seems to be as selfish as it is selfless. You work really hard on your body, its physically very very exhausting, you hardly get paid until you're noticed, its looked at (in the indian culture) as a pass time or time pass thing to do till you get married and have babies! (must add that times are changing, slowly and steadily though) .
A very common notion is that you need to be really dumb to be dancing. But ask all dancers they would say you need to be very intelligent to be able to dance the way we do! In our society, people sit at desks and on couches all the time, and we’ve become very brain-oriented. Its "cooler" to know a computer program than to know how your body works and functions. If i say move on count 1,2,3 left leg fwd, transfer weight to your right on 2 and left leg back to where it was on 3, and repeat doing the same thing back starting with the right at the same time moving your hips following a sleeping number 8, holding your partner and leading with right hand on her left shoulder blade, not many people will be able to "de-code". Try it in the first or second read to see if you get it!
We dont realize the importance of exercise, forget dance. I'll make it easy for you, following are few of the benefits of dancing or exercising:
Conditions the body, Helps keep the heart in shape, Builds and increases stamina, Develops the circulatory system, Improved posture, Maintains flexibility, Helps prevent lower back problems, Helps prepare women for childbirth, Reduces stress, Decrease blood pressure, Help you manage your weight, Strengthen the bones of your legs and hips, Increase energy, Improve strength, Increase muscle tone and coordination etc etc etc
For me, when i Salsa, i feel it. Its a feeling that only some may find in their journey through life. Its something you can feel when you see me or anyone who has that soul connect while dancing. I may or may not dance according to any rules laid down by the "Salsa Rules Governing Body" but i know my true passion and love lies in Salsa.
Its true that everyone is not going to find that same connect, what i feel for dance, someone else might feel while they write or while they sing. All i am stressing here is the importance is to keep an open mind to dancing or anything "arty" and to look after your body. Wondering why? Ask Yourself!

Whats your move??
Every "body" has its own unique dance that changes in every moment.
Every individual has the capacity to gain self knowledge through movement expression.
The dance that comes before all others is the dance for yourself.

Tips for a Salsa Beginner....
Why dance!? is a question that most of my non dancer ( by most i mean all) friends keep asking. They have never tried it, if they have tried it they think they cant do it, if they have been able to do it they dont think it looks as good when they do it. The point is its not how it looks, its how you feel. Unless you are performing for someone else, it really doesn't matter whether the other person does 3 pirouettes and you can manage just about half. As long as you know that you tried your best and that you enjoy what you are doing! I haven't met a single person yet who hasn't felt good dancing be it a so called "ghati" dance to some bollywood music or be it a very technically choreographed dance.
Salsa Dancing in particular is a very interesting partner dance that helps to harmonize the male and the female. It has set roles for each person and it is very easy to co-relate to our daily life and to our roles as men and women. For example, one very very important aspect of Salsa Basics is that Women always start with the right foot back, thats the first step, something very easy to co-relate with it is that women start from the right because women are always right!! On a serious note, Salsa is very good to build inter-personal relationships, to build your confidence and to teach you social skills, apart from the usual de-stressing, toning your body and losing weight.
5 fun tips for a Salsa Beginner
1. Look good and Smell good. Its a partner dance, you don't want your partner to find another partner to dance with. Be considerate to everyone around you and put on your best perfume, breath freshner and come to salsa class.
2. Listen to the Count. Yes you know you pick up well and you think you might just be better than your teacher. But since you are in a class, follow your teacher's count and dance to the music.
3. Practice when your away from class. You can apply Salsa to chores in your daily life and make them more interesting and also practice at the same time. Do the basic step while you cook, Practice the hand leads while you jog on the treadmill, Move your feet while sitting on the computer, i am sure you can come up with more things to do while you salsa!!!
4. Don't feel shy. Its ok to dance in public even if you have learnt only the basics. Thats something to start from. Just find a partner and dance like no one's watching!
5. Create your moves. After all dance is a form of personal expression. Even if it means doing something totally different, just do it! Create your own move within the Salsa count framework and you can work wonders on the dance floor!
BONUS TIP: Stop procrastinating and waiting for the angel to sit on your right shoulder telling you to join salsa class. Just pick up your phone and dial 9619816747 and find out the details and come to class and have loads of fun!
